Mets Trade Deadline Update

Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel have reportedly fought the Mets higherarchy to keep the coaching staff in place, all because they still believe they can make a run for the playoffs. Apparently they think the current offense will turn it around, but adding pitching before the deadline will increase their chances. According to Si.com’s Jon Heyman nothing is immenent in a deal with the Kansas City Royals. Earlier in the day Ken Rosenthal was reporting the Mets and Royals were getting close on a deal for Gil Meche and or Scott Forensworth while giving up Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo. Heyman still believes the Mets are intrigued by Ted Lilly, but says, the Cubs have still not said they are ready to deal him, and say nothing is immenent. Heyman belives the Yankees also may be interested, as they will not likely want to pick up the 40 million dollars star Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt is due the next three years.

Matt Cerone from metsblog.com reports:

According to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com, the Red Sox offered RHP Ramon Ramirez to the Mets for C Rod Barajas, who was put on the disabled list today.
The 28–year-old Ramirez is 0–3 with a 4.69 ERA for Boston this season, while striking out 28 batters and walking 15 in 40 innings.
However, the previous two seasons, he was 10–6 with a 2.74 ERA in 141 relief appearances.
… As of now I would make this trade, Barajas was ok in April and May, but has been awful since, I would rather have the young Josh Thole catch everyday, and the Mets have Henry Blanco so they still have a strong veteran who can tutor Thole into becoming a solid major league catcher….

…As far as I am concerned the coaching staff will be shaken up if the Mets do not go at least .500 on this 6 game homestand. I believe no matter what happens Jerry Manuel will not be fired, if the Mets do not make the playoffs though, I dont think he will get a new contract…
