Mets reach Deal With Scott Hairston

Reported first by Ted Berg of Tedquarters and SNY.TV, and then later confirmed by Adam Rubin, the Mets have reached a deal with outfielder Scott Hairtson.

“Scott Alexander Hairston…a 1999 graduate of Canyon Del Oro High School in Tucson, Ariz., before attending Central Arizona Junior College in Coolidge…tabbed by Baseball America as the 2001 preseason Player of the Year in junior college baseball…won the Arizona Junior College triple crown that season, batting .503 with 18 homers and 77 RBI…helped the semi-professional Liberal (KS) BeeJays to the 2000 National Baseball Congress World Series title… signed originally by Diamondbacks scout Steve Kmetco…fifth member of his family to play Major League Baseball…Hairston family joins the Boones and Bells as MLB’s only three-generation families…grandfather Sam played for the White Sox (1951), uncle John played for the Cubs (1969) and father Jerry played for the White Sox and Pirates (1973-89)…Sam Hairston played for the Negro American League’s Birmingham Black Barons and Indianapolis Clowns, later becoming the first African American to play for the White Sox…his brother, Jerry, also plays for the Padres.”- From San Deigo Padres Media Guide, as seen on Adam Rubin’s Mets Blog

Earlier in the week the Mets signed anothe candidate for the fourth outfield spot in Willie Harris Jr, probably most notably known for three ridiculous catches he has made against the Mets in 2008 to rob Carlos Delgado of a game winning homerun, and in 2010, coming in on a sinking linedrive off the bat of Rod Barajas that would have brought home the winning run.

…As Adam Rubin pointed out in a post to his Mets Blog on ESPN New York, these aquisitions hurt Nick Evans chances of making the roster. I would have to think that would be especially true if Daniel Murphy makes the squad, as he can fill in at first to give Ike Davis and occasional blow. Many sources indicate that with Young, Cappuano, Buckholtz, Tankersley, Hairston and Harris all aquired, the Mets are “done” with this hotstove market…
