Deal or No Deal?

According to the Denver Post, the New York Knicks and the Denver Nuggets are coming closer to finalizing a deal for Nuggets Forward Carmelo Anthony.

The latest trade offer includes New York sending guard Raymond Felton, forwards Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari, centers Timofey Mozgov and Eddy Curry and a first-round draft pick to the Nuggets for Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams and Anthony Carter or Renaldo Balkman, according to NBA sources.” – Chris Dempsey, Denver Post

Just as the banker in Deal or No Deal starts making the offer more lucrative, as the million dollar prize becomes more likely, so will the Denver Nuggets ceed to pressure and lower the deal. Not only do they fear not dealing Carmelo and then losing him to free agency this summer, but they also want to make other deals before the Thursday 3pm deadline.

 Deal 1:
Send: Gallinari, Chandler, Felton, Eddy Curry, Timofey Mosgov and 1st round pick
Receive:  Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Sheldon Williams, Ronaldo Balkman
NO DEAL HOWIE! The asking price simply is too high. The Knicks biggest problem currently is that A’mare Stoudemire is forced to play the Center, even though he is much more valued as a PF. To send away your only other Center options in Timofey Mosgov, and dare I say it Eddy Curry is idiotic.

Although Carmelo is an upgrade over current Forward Danillo Gallinari, making the biggest hole on the team even bigger will not help them beat the Magic and big man Dwight Howard.

Deal 2:
Send: Gallinari, Chandler, Felton, Curry, and 1st round pick
Recieve: Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Sheldon Williams
DEAL! Press the big red button and drop the confetti! Just as in the popular show it does not take much for people to change their mind about what is a good deal.

Although I like Wilson Chandler and believe he is coming into his own this season, he is a free agent at the end of the year, and so if they add Carmelo now or then, he most likely would not be resigned due to salary cap constraints.
I am not hung up about swapping Knicks PG Raymond Felton for Chauncey Billups, because he too will be a free agent after next season, allowing them to pursue Deron Williams or Chris Paul. In the immediate future though, it would mean backup PG Toney Douglous would have to take on a larger role, because Billups at 34 will not be able to play 40 minutes every night.
Gallinari is a favorite of mine. I think this season he has shown a willingness to both break his man down, as well as play defense, but in the end he is not as good as Carmelo Anthony and never will be. Asked earlier in the year if he would ever be a star in the NBA, he said “No, I dont think so.” I am sorry but it is that kind of personality that is holding him back from being the true great player he could be.

Then finally we have kept the Eddy Curry contract rather than buying him out for this exact reason, using him as trade bate.
Yet at the end of the show, after you have taken the deal, the case that was sitting just next to you is revealed. Could it be that what we had in this team before the big deal, was of far greater value than what we just agreed to?
We will have to wait until the end of the season, and then OPEN THE CASE…

  1. If trading Mozgov is what it takes to get Carmelo to New York the knicks should absolutely trade him. While 7 foot bodies are hard to find, 7 foot bodies with no skill are more or less useless besides eating up minutes. He is replacable and Melo is not.
