St. John’s falls early after long tournament drought

By Shane Weisberg

St. John’s hadn’t been in the tournament in over a decade, and when that’s the case, it’s a good start just to get there. Unfortunately, the Red Storm will be exiting early as they lost 86-71 to the Gonzaga bulldogs. It will also be tough to return to the tourney soon after the graduation of nine seniors after this season.

With top rebounder D.J. Kennedy on the bench with a torn ACL, the bulldogs dominated the boards and out-rebounded the Red Storm 43-20. Even with 26 points from Dwight Hardy, St. John’s couldn’t keep up with the WCC champions and quickly fell behind. Gonzaga played very good defense, made clutch shots and never looked back.

The Bulldogs will advance to play the Brigham Young Cougars in the Second Round, but for avid New York fans, third seed Syracuse and 15th seed Long Island are both still alive in the tournament.
